The growing energy demands linked to centralized AI models, according to Schahram Dustdar, Chair of WIC SC on AI and Member of Academia Europaea in his video presentation at the Symposium on AI4S hosted by the WIC SC on AI on Feb 19.
Dustdar pointed out that training large transformer models requires significant energy and contributes to rising CO2 emissions. He expressed concern that the centralization of AI is not sustainable for the environment. He called for more investment in distributed intelligence research as an alternative, aiming to reduce the environmental impact while advancing AI technology.
