Xiamen in East China's Fujian province ranked first in a review of 46 key cities in national garbage classification pilot program in the first quarter of 2019, and the coastal city has retained the title for four consecutive quarters, according to a report from Sohu.

The pilot program is designed to be completed by the end of 2020, and by 2025 the garbage classification system should be functioning nationwide.

In addition, Xiamen has rolled out diversified mechanisms to implement the program and applied them to annual performance appraisals of all institutions in the city.

Trash bins with four distinct colors have been allocated to residential areas in Xiamen where households and institutions are required to classify their garbage into four categories: recyclable waste, hazardous waste, household food waste and residual waste.

Chen Rongguang, who is in charge of a district property office, has collected ideas from front-line employees working in the district and made some improvements to the trash bins.

The staff in the district attached fixed pulleys and pieces of rope with a plastic handle to trash bins to help residents to dispose of their garbage.

Chen said he expects promotional material on trash sorting will be put inside the transparent plastic handles.
