Science and technology enterprises carry out research and development of core technologies, and accelerate the transformation of scientific achievements.

The Beijing Science and Technology Commission and the Zhongguancun Science Park Administrative Committee have successively issued support policies for the following: tech-based small- and medium-sized enterprises, cutting-edge and game-changing technology innovation enterprises, gazelle enterprises, unicorns, etc.

The number of S&T enterprises in Beijing rose from 363,000 in 2015 to 653,000 in 2021, with an average of 76,300 newly established companies each year. 

The number of high-tech enterprises has surged from 3,286 in 2012 to 27,638 in 2021, an increase of 7.41 times.

The number of unicorn companies has nearly doubled from 54 in 2017 to 102 in 2021, and their total valuation has grown from $200 billion to $370 billion. The  number of research and development institutions has also expanded from 112 in 2012 to 221 in 2021.

The number of high-tech enterprises in Zhongguancun went up from 14,929 in 2012 to 24,055 in 2021, an increase of 61.13 percent.

In addition, the number of gazelle enterprises in the Zhongguancun Science Park increased from 5,054 in 2017 to 5,629 in 2021, an increase of 11.4 percent. 

Since 2018, 16 leading companies in the industry -- including Xiaomi and BOE -- have been supported to build corporate technology innovation centers in the amount of 155 million yuan ($22 million). By the end of 2020, seven companies have realized the physical operation of technology innovation centers.

Enterprise R & D investment has also increased steadily. 

In 2021, among the 19,000 key enterprises above designated size in Beijing, 44.6 percent   have carried out research and development, an increase of 20.4 percentage points from 2013. The number of enterprise R&D personnel reached 909,000, which is 2.5 times that of 2013. The total cost of enterprise research and development was 471.44 billion yuan ($67.6 billion), 5.3 times that of 2013. Research and development expenses accounted for 4.9 percent of operating income, an increase of 2.4 percentage points over 2013.

Patent applications are steadily advancing. The number of patent authorizations in Beijing increased from 50,511 in 2012 to 198,778 in 2021, with an average annual increase of 16.44 percent. The number of invention patents increased from 20,140 to 79,210, with an average annual increase of 16.43 percent. The number of PCT international patent applications grew from 2,705 to 10,358, with an average annual increase of 16.09 percent.
