Wind and solar energy have overtaken coal as Zhejiang's largest power source, according to the State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co.

The total installed capacity reached 152 million kilowatts by the end of January 2025, with wind and solar contributing 55.96 million kilowatts — 76 percent of all new capacity added that month.

Policy-driven expansion is boosting this rapid growth. Zhejiang's renewable capacity now stands at 59.08 million kilowatts, nearly 40 percent of the province's energy mix. Solar leads with 49.47 million kilowatts, while wind accounts for 6.49 million kilowatts.

On Feb 8, Zhejiang's wind and solar output hit a record 32.15 million kilowatts, with solar alone peaking at 28.64 million kilowatts — a new high.

"The province's expanding renewable portfolio is cutting emissions, strengthening energy security, and powering Zhejiang's economic development," said Guo Yunpeng, an authority with the State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co.
