Wuwei

Wuwei, known as Liangzhou in ancient times, is located in the middle of Gansu province and at the eastern end of the Hexi Corridor. It is the birthplace of the antique statue of “Bronze Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow”, which has been taken as a Chinese tourist symbol. It has jurisdiction over one district and three counties and a total area of 32,300 km2, and had a population of 1.8250 million in 2019. There are 38 ethnic groups living in this city, including Han, Tibetan, Hui and Mongolian people. It has a reputation as the “Hometown of Fine Horses and the City of Wine”, the “Capital of Chinese Tourism Symbol”, an “Open City of China”, a “Famous Historical and Cultural City of China”, an “Excellent Tourist City of China”, “China Wine City”, “Hometown of Chinese Wine”, “the Only Producing area of White Yaks in the World” and the “Hometown of Chinese Ginseng Fruit”.

Wuwei has attracted many talents with its profound history and cultural relics and monuments. In 121 BC, General Huo Qubing marched into Hexi and defeated Xiongnu. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty(206BC-AD 220) was named as Wuwei to show his “martial arts and military prestige”. There are numerous representative local cultural resources such as the bronze chariot and horse honor figurines of the Han Tomb in Leitai, the Xixia tablet of the “Walking Dictionary”, the Confucian Temple of the Crown of Longyou School Palace, and the Tiantishan Grottoes (the ancestor of the Grottoes).

Wuwei Minqin Shiyanghe Wetland Park, Arid Wetland Qingtu Lake, Shenzhou Desert Wildlife Park, Desert Park and Hongyashan Reservoir show the unique natural landscape of the arid desert area. The Huangyanghe leisure agricultural tourism area is a good place for rural tourism.  Wuwei city has held an “International Wine Forum” on a regular basis, as well as an “Organic Grape Wine Festival” and other cultural exhibitions to promote the internationalization of its wine culture.

Wuwei, rich in products, has been a land of prosperity.  As the poem says, “households are everywhere and mulberry trees are flourishing”. With unique agricultural resources, it is not only the production base of melons, fruits and meat in Gansu Province, but also one of the best areas for green food. It has obvious advantages in the development of vegetables, meat, eggs, milk and characteristic forest fruits in solar greenhouses. With distinctive ecological resources, Shiyanghe National Wetland Park in Minqin is a typical, unique and rare ecological demonstration project in northwest China and throughout the arid desert region of China, and plays a very important role in maintaining the security of the Minqin oasis and conserving biodiversity.
