Nestled at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, Zhangye city in Gansu province is witnessing a remarkable transformation in its agricultural landscape. With the discovery of 302,800 mu (approximately 20,187 hectares) of selenium-rich soil, the region is embracing a new era of agricultural prosperity.

On April 7, 2024, farmers in Shuangqiao village, Qingquan town, Shandan county, Zhangye city, were busy with spring planting. Using Beidou navigation-enabled automatic tractors and integrated seeding, fertilizing, mulching, and drip irrigation equipment, they sowed the seeds of hope in the fertile selenium-rich soil.

Across seven townships in Shandan county, 50 varieties of 10 crops -- including wheat, barley, oats, barley, millet, rapeseed, sunflower, cumin, fennel, and corn -- are being planted in the selenium-rich soil. This diverse range of crops showcases the versatility and potential of this unique land.

In recent years, Zhangye has collaborated with universities and agricultural research institutes to leverage scientific expertise. Through molecular breeding experiments, crop varieties that meet human selenium requirements and are suitable for local conditions have been selected. This scientific approach ensures optimal crop quality and yield.

The development of the selenium industry in Zhangye is not only transforming agriculture but also driving rural revitalization. Encouraged by the government, farmers are embracing the cultivation of selenium-rich grains, selenium-rich vegetables, and other pollution-free agricultural products, green foods, and organic foods, producing products that are highly sought-after by consumers.

The selenium-rich soil of Zhangye represents a precious resource, and its development holds immense potential for the region's agricultural sector. By embracing scientific innovation, promoting diversified planting, and establishing standardized production and management systems, Zhangye is poised to become a leading producer of high-quality selenium-rich products, contributing to the prosperity of the local economy and the well-being of its people.
