The last tube coupling for the Chebei Road-Xinjiao East Road Tunnel, which connects Tianhe and Haizhu districts across the Pearl River, was installed on Jan 7.

The project starts at Haizhu's Xingang East Road in the south and ends at the intersection of Tianhe's Huangpu Avenue. It has a total length of nearly 2,070 meters, of which the tunnel accounts for 1,547 meters. The tunnel provides three lanes in each direction and has a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour.

The main tunnel structure in Haizhu has been completed, while 68 percent of that in Tianhe has been completed. The tunnel is expected to be completed in the middle of this year and open to traffic by the end of 2022.

The tunnel connects Chebei South Road in Tianhe to the surroundings of Guangzhou InterContinental Hotel in Haizhu. The required driving time will be reduced from the current 15-30 minutes to two-five minutes.

In addition, the tunnel will build a strategic development channel by connecting Guangzhou International Financial City in Tianhe and the Pazhou Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Digital Economy Innovation Pilot Zone in Haizhu.
