I was once told that a journey to China is incomplete without a visit to Shandong province, as within its borders lies a treasure trove of history, culture and natural wonders. So I was filled with anticipation when China Daily extended an invitation to me to embark on a journey to Shandong.

Among the numerous attractions we had the pleasure of visiting, a handful stood out to me as particularly captivating.

The Chengziya Museum in Jinan plays a crucial role in the preservation, research and education of the Neolithic history of Shandong province. It serves as an important cultural institution, contributing to the understanding and appreciation of China's ancient civilizations. The museum's efforts in promoting archaeological awareness and fostering historical curiosity make it a significant destination for both local and international tourists interested in exploring China's rich cultural heritage.

Daming Lake, also in Jinan, is a famous natural attraction in Shandong. It's a historic lake spanning 46 hectares, known for its beauty and significance. Surrounding greenery and pavilions create a serene atmosphere.

The name "Daming" reflects its clear waters, which are fed by nearby springs, including the famous Baotu Spring, also known as the "Number One Spring under Heaven" for its impressive water volume and consistent temperature. Both sites offer a rich historical and scenic experience in Jinan.

We ended our trip by participating in the opening ceremony of the Global Youth Conference and one of its panels: Global Gen Zer Dialogue with Shandong.

I think these events play a crucial role in fostering strong networks and lifelong friendships among young people from diverse countries and backgrounds. They serve as a catalyst, facilitating meaningful collaborations, projects and initiatives that have a positive impact on local communities and the world as a whole.

By offering a platform for dialogue, learning and exchange, the events empower young individuals to actively participate in shaping a future that is inclusive, sustainable and interconnected. They not only celebrate the voices and perspectives of Generation Z but also recognize their important role as agents of positive change in today's global society.

This journey to Shandong offered us an unforgettable blend of historical sites, cultural immersion and natural beauty. And the experience provided a deep appreciation for the province's treasures and the impactful connections, not only with other international students from across the world, but also with local people in China.
