Tangwu town: Where every note counts

Tangwu town, Changle county, Weifang, Shandong province, has become a global hub for electric guitar production. Its distinctive guitar-shaped street signs, welcoming visitors to various guitar manufacturing companies, have become a local hallmark.

With over 108 instrument manufacturing and parts processing companies, Tangwu town produces an impressive two million electric guitars and five million sets of parts annually. This accounts for approximately 40 percent of China's and 30 percent of the world's total electric guitar production. Tangwu town's instruments are exported to over 130 countries and regions, generating annual revenue exceeding one billion yuan ($136 million).

The town's musical journey began in the early 1970s. Over the course of five decades, it has cultivated a skilled workforce and a comprehensive electric guitar industrial chain. Despite limited formal musical education, many residents have honed their craftsmanship through years of dedicated work.

Today, Tangwu boasts over 40 local brands and holds 35 patents and 42 copyrights. Its products are popular in North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and beyond. The town's 80,000 residents include over 5,000 people employed in the music industry, with an average annual income of 80,000 yuan.

As the industry evolves, the town is now capitalizing on growing demand for personalized guitars. While mass-produced guitars have an average price of 300 yuan, customized instruments can fetch anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 yuan, with some high-end models costing as much as 100,000 yuan.
