Taishan Mountain in Shandong has introduced a new climbing aid: robotic exoskeleton legs. These devices, available for rent at the scenic area, provide climbers with 30 to 50 percent assistance, making the climb easier and more enjoyable.

Originally designed for rehabilitation, the technology has been adapted for tourism through collaboration with tech companies. The exoskeletons weigh 1.8 kilograms and use AI algorithms to adapt to each user's walking habits.

Exoskeletons have been a hit, with 500 units sent to key locations across Taishan Mountain. Videos of people using the exoskeletons have gone viral, sparking widespread interest. The success of the technology has led to a significant increase in Taishan Mountain's visitor numbers, including a 28 percent rise in elderly tourists by October this year.

This innovation not only improves the climbing experience but also aligns with Shandong's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–30), which emphasizes the use of new technologies and products to boost industries like artificial intelligence and smart tourism.
