Yangpu district in Shanghai recently welcomed nearly 40 media outlets from countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative for a special one-day tour, which showcased the district's innovative spirit and community-focused urban development.
The "Let's YOUNG" Belt and Road media tour was meticulously designed with five key stops, covering diverse areas such as economic development, technological innovation, urban renewal, and community governance.
Journalists explored the GKIC Innovation and Development Demonstration Zone. Spanning 8.2 square kilometers, the zone is home to nearly 4,500 cultural and technology enterprises and is closely linked with renowned universities like Fudan University and Tongji University.
Once known for its industrial past, the district now hosts major digital companies like Meituan, Bilibili, and Douyin, with over 8,300 digital economy enterprises. Over 30 percent of local enterprises are digital economy firms, contributing more than 60 percent of the district's revenue.
The media tour highlighted Yangpu's innovative ecosystem, which connects academic institutions with commercial areas, fostering a vibrant blend of academic excellence, cutting-edge technology, and vibrant community life.
The tour continued along the Yangpu Riverside. Iconic sites like the Green Hill and the Shanghai International Fashion Center offered a mix of historical charm and modern amenities.
The Changbai 228 Block, once a workers' housing complex, has been revitalized into a cultural and commercial hub, featuring apartments, smart supermarkets, and cultural displays. The project preserves historical architecture while also meeting modern needs.
The "Let's YOUNG" media event presented Yangpu as a model of high-quality development and livability. The district's innovative practices, from digital economy growth to urban renewal, offer valuable insights for global urban development.
As the Belt and Road Initiative expands, Yangpu's achievements serve as a testament to China's urban development strategies, offering global cities a glimpse into the future of urban living.
