Autumn's palette paints Putuo's streets
As late autumn turns to early winter, the streets of Putuo district come alive with a silent yet vibrant display of color. Leaves transition from green to gold and red — a natural response to cooler temperatures and shorter days.

This annual color show is shaped by Putuo's diverse urban forest. Among over 50,000 street trees — including more than 30,000 plane trees — 45 species line 33 shaded avenues and nine distinctive green roads. Since 2019, 27 additional colorful pathways have been created, introducing 3,071 trees of 17 varieties.

Plane trees, with their broad canopies, dominate the streetscape. Their leaves turn gold in autumn, contrasting with hanging seed balls. In the Cao Yang green belt, 11 connected roads — like Huaxi and Tongbai roads — allow fallen leaves to remain, inviting residents to stroll through seasonal carpets.

Different streets offer unique scenes: red maples glow on Lantian and Nanzheng roads; ginkgoes spread gold along West Taopu and South Zhenhua roads; yellow rain trees brighten Beishi and Lingshi roads.

More than mere greenery, these trees mark the rhythm of the city and the passage of time. Quietly, year after year, they outline Putuo's autumn and winter, allowing every passerby to witness nature's artistry in the heart of the urban landscape.
