Hongkou sets example for urban high-quality development
Shanghai's Hongkou district has made remarkable strides in economic growth, industrial development, urban renewal, cultural vitality, and creating a livable environment during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Party Secretary Li Qian announced at a recent press conference.
From 2021 to 2025, Hongkou's economy has flourished, with its GDP growing from 100 billion yuan ($14.16 billion) to 150 billion yuan, averaging a 4.8 percent annual increase. The district's fixed asset investments reached 300 billion yuan, expanding by 7.8 percent each year.
The North Bund area is central to Hongkou's high-quality development. A new 480-meter skyscraper is being rapidly constructed and is expected to exceed 100 meters by year-end. The 3.4-kilometer waterfront has become a scenic highlight, offering cruise, yacht, and boat services. It is aiming to achieve national tourism resort status.
The area has become a significant hub for conferences and exhibitions, serving as a critical window for Shanghai to connect with the world. Over the past five years, the number of countries investing in the area has quadrupled, and the number of headquarters enterprises has reached 112, a fivefold increase.
Hongkou has shifted its industrial focus to high-end sectors, with shipping and finance accounting for over 40 percent of regional growth. The district has attracted international organizations and significant foreign investments, including a foreign-owned fintech company. Emerging industries, particularly green technology and biotechnology, are thriving.
The district is experiencing a cultural revival, driven by initiatives that celebrate its historical and cultural legacy. Events like the Lu Xun Cultural Week and the centennial celebration of a local popular red tourism site attract millions. Revitalized cultural venues provide new spaces for art and community engagement.
Hongkou has been committed to improving residents' quality of life through robust public services and community initiatives. The district has increased its investment in public welfare, focusing on elder care and community services. Innovative governance models have enhanced social harmony and public satisfaction.
As Hongkou enters the next phase of its development plan, it is ready to further its economic and industrial transformation. The district aims to solidify its status as a modern urban benchmark and play a key role in Shanghai's goal to become a globally influential metropolis.
