Shenzhen's original Chinese dance drama Wing Chun, a captivating fusion of martial arts and dance, made its North American debut in Toronto, Canada, on the evening of Dec 16, local time. The performance played to a full house, receiving thunderous applause.

The show, created and performed by the Shenzhen Opera & Dance Theatre, will run for 20 performances, concluding on Jan 4, 2026.

"It's an international work of global significance. I speak no Cantonese or Mandarin, but I understood it completely perfectly. It completely transcended that the story itself is really so compelling to me," said Clyde Wagner, president and CEO of TO Live, one of the organizers for the show's residency, noting that the box office is growing.

Since its premiere at the end of 2022, the drama has toured nearly 300 performances globally, including in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, London, Paris, Moscow, and St. Petersburg, earning international acclaim.

It has set a record for the most performances by a Chinese original dance drama abroad, garnering both box office success and critical acclaim.

The city of Shenzhen, known as "China's Silicon Valley", hosted a promotional event prior to the performance of the dance drama. This year also marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada.

In his speech at the event, Chinese Consul General in Toronto Luo Weidong stated that Shenzhen's remarkable transformation from a small border town to an international metropolis has fostered an open and inclusive urban character, giving birth to outstanding cultural works like Wing Chun that blend traditional heritage with modern vitality.

He noted that the Wing Chun performances would allow Toronto audiences to experience the essence of traditional Chinese culture and the allure of contemporary Chinese artistic expression.

The cultural showcase is poised to inject new vitality into Canada's multicultural fabric and deepen people-to-people connections through the universal language of art, he added.

Reza Moridi, former minister of Research, Innovation and Science of Ontario, Canada, echoed his view.

"They bring Chinese culture to Canada and build bridges between the people of the two countries," said Moridi. " Toronto and Shenzhen, they became sort of sister cities about 10 years ago or so, and I think the relationship will continue to grow stronger."

Shenzhen, a young and innovative city, was just designated as the host city for the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

The event featured a screening of the 2026 APEC promotional video "Shenzhen Invitation", showcasing the unique allure of Shenzhen, including its exceptional geographical advantages, convenient entry services, natural beauty blending mountains and sea, fashionable and diverse shopping and tourism offerings, technological innovation, and open, multicultural urban atmosphere.

Canadian attendees expressed their anticipation of experiencing the innovative beauty of Chinese culture through Wing Chun and looked forward to the opportunity to visit Shenzhen.

Ding Zhongyuan, deputy director of Shenzhen Municipal Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism, and Sports Bureau, said it made a breakthrough in the Chinese art community for Wing Chun to perform 20 shows at a single overseas theater.

His bureau, together with the Publicity Department of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, produced the dance drama.

He said now is a particularly meaningful time to stage the show in Canada, one of the 21 economies of APEC, as Shenzhen will host the international event next year.
