A total of 40 boxes of fresh waxberries from Xianju county, East China's Zhejiang province, set forth on a 36-hour journey to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on June 12.

This marked the first time for Xianju waxberries to be exported to countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Taizhou Chenji Food Co Ltd, a food company specializing in the production of agricultural products, is the provider of the exported waxberries.

"Approximately 20 tons of waxberries will be exported to countries including Canada, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy and UAE this June and July," said Ying Haiyue, head of the company.

To extend the shelf life of the waxberries, the company applied vacuum packaging, which allows the juicy fruit to keep fresh for five to 10 days.

Meanwhile, considering the non-durable nature of waxberries, Taizhou Customs inspected samples in advance and expedited the process of customs clearance for waxberry products.

Xianju is well-known for its waxberry plantations. Every harvest season many visitors from neighboring areas come to pick the fruit and experience the peaceful rural life in the county.

A complete production industrial chain has been formed in Xianju. In addition to fresh waxberries, an assortment of products made from waxberries such as juice, wine and dried fruit are available.
