Tiantai, a county in East China's Zhejiang province, launched a three-year plan in 2018 to boost the development of its agriculture, and one year on, it has proven to be productive so far.

The plan, aimed at building the whole county into a "grand farm" involving the participation of every family, is considered an important approach to improve the quality, brand building and marketing of agriculture in Tiantai.

For production, the county set a series of standards for the growing environment, farming, processing, storage and transportation of agricultural products. So far, Tiantai has made 45 standard operating instructions for growing superior plants.

The government also developed an app to trace and regulate the products online in hope of ensuring their safety and quality as much as possible.

To promote the sales of agricultural products, Tiantai combined online and offline sales channels, and helped farmers attract advance orders from purchasers to reassure their worries.

"In the past, our pork couldn't be sold at a good price, but now, we don't need to worry about it any longer," said Tang Junyi, a local farmer.

To help local products reach more corners of the country, a logistics park with functions of trade, storage and delivery has been put into trial operation. "Once the park is completely constructed, it will be the largest trade platform for agricultural products in the coastal area of east Zhejiang," said Wu Qing, a staff member of the park.

The "grand farm" Tiantai is striving to build is also expected to be a big garden for tourists, according to the plan.

Based on the county's farming culture, Tiantai created eight travel routes connecting the most beautiful plantations. Moreover, a variety of festivals are organized throughout the year to attract visitors to experience rural life in the county.

In Nanping town, a festival themed on red maples has been organized for eight consecutive years. Gu Fengdao, Party chief of the town, said savoring the fresh air and taking some agricultural products home have been a popular way of spending weekends for urban residents.

In 2018, the combination of agriculture and tourism generated an output value of over 200 million yuan ($29.51 million) for Tiantai county.
