Zhejiang Lab -- a research institute jointly founded by the Zhejiang provincial government, Zhejiang University and tech giant Alibaba Group – offered jobs to 21 researchers with doctorates at an academic seminar in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on July 23.

The lab was approved as a national workstation for post-doctoral research in October 2018 and was granted permission to recruit post-doctoral researchers this June.

Zheng Yuhua, deputy director of the top institute, said the new staff would participate in scientific research projects and assume the lab's core research tasks.

Currently centering on the four research areas -- intelligent sensing, intelligent computing, intelligent networks and intelligent systems -- Zhejiang Lab has been deployed on more than 20 key projects, some of which has got national recognition.

To stimulate the creative vitality of its high-powered team, the lab has been exploring innovative mechanisms to evaluate and encourage this group of people, such as inviting world-renowned scientists to guide their work and providing them with sufficient financial support.

Researcher Hu Peijun said she chose Zhejiang Lab because of its complete and comprehensive systematic deployment, from basic research to practical applications, and the free atmosphere for scientific research.

Hu's speciality is AI-based medical imaging, part of the lab's biomedicines project. She said thanks to close work with local hospitals, the lab could get plenty of first-hand data and resources for research.

According to the official plan, Zhejiang Lab will recruit 100 post-doctoral staff this year and build a team of 300 to 500 at this level of expertise in the future.
