Zhejiang province has been sparing no effort in its battle against the strong winds and heavy rains brought by typhoon Lekima over the past few days, local media reported on Aug 12.

Lekima, the strongest typhoon so far this year in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, rolled inland around 1:45 am on Aug 10 in Wenling, Zhejiang province, packing winds of up to 187 kilometers per hour along with heavy rain, the National Meteorological Center said.

According to the center, it was the third-strongest typhoon to land in eastern China since 1949. The strongest was Wanda in 1956; the second-strongest was Saomai in 2006.

Just two days before the landing of Lekima, the provincial government activated its top-level emergency response procedure and required all relevant authorities to stay on duty 24 hours a day to ward off potential calamities brought about by strong gusts of wind and heavy downpours.

Fishing boats returned to the Shenjiamen fishing port in Zhoushan, a total of 164 flights were cancelled at the Wenzhou airport, and Hangzhou shut down its Thousand Island Lake scenic area and cancelled all cruise trips on the Great Canal and Qiantang River.

Since the typhoon landed on Aug 10, the entire province has been working to evacuate and relocate local residents and tourists, fight against floods and provide relief to victims.
