Inner Mongolia new rice variety for saline-alkali land yields

2021-10-12 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The new rice variety "Jinhuangxiang No 3" recently had a yield of 806.66 kilograms per mu (0.07 hectares), setting a new record for the yield of conventional rice in northern alpine regions.

"Jinhuangxiang No 3" is a trial rice variety grown in Tumd Left Banner in the city of Hohhot in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Tumd Left Banner's low temperatures, lack of water, and barren land made it unsuitable for rice growing.

In 2018, Inner Mongolia Jiatai Green Agriculture Development Co and the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences established a production-university-research cooperation relationship and established a high-end rice variety breeding base to cultivate a high-quality rice variety that can be widely planted in Inner Mongolia's saline-alkali land.

After three years of breeding, genetic analysis, and field verification, a new high-quality saline-alkali rice variety—"Jinhuangxiang No 3" was successfully selected.

This variety is characterized by salt and alkali resistance and a short production period, and it is a new high-yield and high-quality saline-alkali rice variety specially cultivated for irrigation areas along the Yellow River,  according to Liang Xun, general manager of Inner Mongolia Jiatai Green Agricultural Development Co.

The rice is bright beige in color, chewy, soft, and tasty, and has a sweet aftertaste.

In 2021, "Jinhuangxiang No 3" became the main rice variety for the rice quality control technology system in Hohhot, and has obtained green food A-level product and organic product certification.

It has also been placed in the national famous, special, and high-quality new agricultural product catalog and the Inner Mongolia agricultural and animal husbandry product brand catalog and has been designated a national key poverty alleviation product.

The new variety is currently grown over an area of 3,000 mu, covering Hohhot's three banners and counties and Juungar Banner in Ordos.
