Construction of the Ganqimaodu-Gashuunsukhait Railway, the second cross-border railway linking China and Mongolia, has surpassed the halfway mark, as announced by China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau Group on Aug 27.

The project has completed construction of all 321 bridge piers, marking the completion of major substructure work and the start of bridge girder erection and deck construction.

The 9.91-kilometer railway starts at Ganqimaodu Port in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region and extends to Gashuunsukhait Station in Mongolia's South Gobi Province, including a 6.08-km cross-border bridge section.

Launched in May 2025 under the principle of "unified design, separate construction, and one-time connection", the project is the two countries' second cross-border railway after the Ereenhot-Zamyn-Uud line opened in 1956.

The project has completed 701 of 760 T-girders, with 390 already installed. Full girder installation is expected to be complete by October.

Once operational, the railway is expected to handle up to 30 million metric tons of freight annually, strengthening China-Mongolia connectivity and boosting trade along the route.
