Students of Xinmin Primary School in Rugao, a county-level city in Nantong, recently completed paper-cut work in the form of a long roll.

The newly-finished work Pan Gu Created the World measures 6 meters in length and 27.5 centimeters in height and took six students nearly three months to complete.

Pan Gu is a giant in ancient Chinese mythology who created the world by separating the heaven and the earth from chaos.

One of the creators, Xu Yejie, who was in charge of Pan giving birth to everything, said that he used different cutting techniques to depict a brave and selfless Pan Gu.

"What our students have created is mainly inspired by local culture and history," said Wang Zhujun, a practitioner of the Rugao paper-cut craft and a teacher at Xinmin Primary School.

Because his students like mythological figures, he asked them to create a paper-cut work themed on Pan Gu to showcase various elements of traditional Chinese culture.

In Wang's opinion, cutting paper can broaden students' horizons and improve their aesthetic judgment and artistic taste from Chinese tradition and history.

Xinmin Primary School students in recent years have created multiple outstanding works, including characters from the classic Chinese novel Shuihuzhuan (Heroes of the Marshes) and Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival based on the renowned ancient painting of the same name
