Seal carving was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 and has found new vitality in Dongying Economic and Technological Development Zone, which is located in East China's Shandong province.
Ren Guirong, an inheritor of this esteemed craft, begins her process by placing a piece of Xuan paper over a draft design, swiftly sketching the seal pattern with a brush.
Her left hand steadies the wooden carving clamp, while her right hand guides the knife in swift, controlled motions — curves dominate, while straight lines accentuate — creating sharp, deliberate strokes. In just five minutes, the rudimentary shape of a seal begins to take shape.
"Both my grandfather and father were seasoned seal carvers. As a child, I often sat by their workbench, captivated by their meticulous craftsmanship. Though I couldn't fully grasp the art at the time, a seed of passion was planted," said Ren.
Over decades, Ren's passion has flourished. From initially imitating her predecessors' work to designing her own drafts and carving seals, Ren has honed her craft through 30 years of dedication, and ultimately became a full-time artisan.
