The former Residence of Chen Fang, a Meixi Royal Stone Archways Tourist Attraction, is a national key cultural relics protection unit and a demonstration unit of cultural tourism in Zhuhai. Chen Fang (1825-1906) was born in Meixi Village, Qianshan Town in Zhuhai. Chen's former residence, combining Chinese and Western elements, includes an ancestral hall, large rooms, western-style houses and drawing rooms.
Chen Fang was the first Chinese consul in Hawaii and the first overseas Chinese millionaire. He was a Privy Council Consultant of Hawaii in 1881 and, by marriage to a princess, a member of the royal family. In 1890, he returned to his hometown and bestowed a fortune in donations. Thus, Emperor Kuang hsu (Guangxu) of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) conferred the stone memorial archway to commend Chen for his philanthropy and contributions to the country.
