The main first-stage of the West Zhuhai Station Logistics Center of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railway near Gongbei Port was completed on Nov 27. The logistics warehouse under construction will be Asia’s second largest single-building single-deck storehouse only next to JD.com’s first highly automated “Asia No.1” warehouse located in Shanghai, with floor space of 100,000 sq m.

Located west of the station in Gongbei, the first-stage project covers 26.8 hectares, the equivalent of 637 standard basketball courts. The spectacular single-building single-deck storehouse has floor space of nearly 47,000 sq m with a length of 702.8 m, width of 66.78 m and height of 15.21 m. It takes almost 30 minutes to walk around it.

The warehouse uses about 2,000 tons of rolled steel with 398 precast concrete columns. According to Li Xinze, project manager of China Railway 25th Bureau Group, the first-stage project of the logistics center is to come into operation by the end of this year. Equipment is being installed and tested while support facilities are undergoing outer wall whitewashing and interior decoration.

Upon completion, the station’s short-term annual cargo handling capacity will reach 7 million tons and long-term capacity will stand at 10 million tons. The station is gradually becoming Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railway’s most complete freight yard with the most extensive facilities and functions.

The largest among nine stations along the railway, West Zhuhai Station is considered crucial in the conversion of the area’s railway logistics layout. The two-phase project will cover 207 hectares with total investment of 2.5 billion yuan ($362million), according to a spokesperson.
