Bridge rendering

The city government will invest over 154 billion yuan ($22.4 billion) in 25 key projects, according to a work program promoting construction of transport infrastructure. The 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period covers seven categories and was approved on Feb 9.

The projects concern expressways, intercity MRT, subway (metro), major municipal roads, seaport, airport, and comprehensive traffic hub. The work program also requires asphalt repaving of a number of roads and setting aside Bus Only lanes in main urban areas. Moreover, research is to begin on a group of long-term planning projects.

Jinhai Bridge design

Six expressway projects: Xianghai Bridge and its sub-line, Honghe Bridge and first phase of the Hezhou-Gaolan Port Expressway should be completed in 2020. The second phase of Hongwan Hub Interflow should be finished in 2017. The Jinhai Highway & Bridge should also open during the period. Moreover, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will be completed by the end of this year, shortening travel time between Zhuhai and Hong Kong from four hours to 45 minutes.  

Three intercity MRT lines: The Gongbei-Hengqin section of the intercity MRT connecting the urban area with Zhuhai Airport should be completed in 2018. The MRT Hengqin-Zhuhai Airport section, and Guanghzou-Foshan-Jiangmen-Zhuhai Intercity MRT Zhuhai section should also be opened. 

Zhuhai Metro Line 1

Two subway lines: Both Metro Line 1 and 2 will come under construction in 2019 and into service in 2024. The west-eastward Metro Line 1 is 36.8 km from Jiuzhou Port in Jida to Jinwan Station, costing 25 billion yuan ($3.6 billion), and the south-northward Line 2 runs 30.6 km from Zhuhai Railway Station in Gongbei to Tangjiawan Station, at a cost of 21 billion yuan ($3 billion).

Nine major roads: Jinqin Express Line, East-West Wing bus express transit, Baishi Bridge, Lovers Avenue southern section main and auxiliary line renovations, Qianshan-Nanping secondary main road, West Lovers Avenue (from Hengqin Bridge to Second Hengqin Bridge), and reconstruction of Hongping Second Road southern section, and Nanwan Avenue (from Hengqin Bridge to Hongdong Interchange) should be completed. Meanwhile, Xingye Road Express Line should come into operation in 2022.

Two airports: Zhuhai Airport upgrade and renovation should be completed in 2020, and the Zhuhai General Airport built in 2018.

Two seaports: Construction of second phase of Gaolan Port Shipping Container Terminal and first phase of 50,000 dwt Huangmao Sea Channel at Gaolan Port should be finished in 2018.

The work program also includes 11 preliminary research projects. Listed are the Jinqin Express North Extension Line, Xianghai Bridge West Extension Line, Huangmao Sea Channel, second phase of Hezhou-Gaolan Port Expressway, Gaolan Port Expressway North Extension Line, Banzhang Mt Tunnel renovation project, Gu Yuan Avenue Xiangzhou section, Zhuhai Airport second taxiway, Jinwan Comprehensive Transportation Hub, Maoshengwei Comprehensive Transportation Hub, and Gaolan Port 200,000 dwt main channel.
