Hong Kong-Zhuhai Airport Management (HKZAM) predicted at its 10th anniversary ceremony on March 24 that the passenger throughput of Zhuhai Airport is expected to exceed 8 million this year.

HKZAM has managed Zhuhai Airport (ZHA) since Oct 1, 2006. A joint venture between the Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government and Airport Authority Hong Kong, the company has seen passenger throughput increase from 799,000 that first year to 6.13 million in 2016, an average growth rate of 22 percent -- twice the national average level.

The airport reached a new height in business during the recent Spring Festival season, with record high monthly passenger numbers of 705,572 in January and 714,296 in February.

General Manager Albert Yau also said that a renovation project to commence construction in July will increase the airport capacity to 11 million passengers upon completion by Chinese New Year 2018.

According to the scheme rendering, a south-facing U-shaped airport terminal -- the West Wing is in use while the East Wing is ready for service -- will be linked to serve as waiting lounge upon renovation.

Currently, the route network of Zhuhai Airport covers all of China except the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province. Starting March 26, the airport will see more than 1,400 flights weekly, a rise of 54.4 percent.
