The May Day holiday will be celebrated for the 2017 Doumen Countryside Tourism Year with a music festival, temple fairs, food and beer attractions, and many other events.

2017 Doumen Music Festival

Time: 10:30 am - 9:30 pm on April 29 and 30

Venue: Shili Lianjiang Agriculture Sightseeing & Experience Garden in Lianzhou Town

The first country music festival in Guangdong Province, it attracted nearly 30,000 spectators last year from the Pearl River Delta and Macao. The main stage will be outdoors in a rice-paddy field lasting from morning to evening whereas the small indoor stage will have performances of music, magic, clowns, and B-Box.

Time-honored folk art legacy

Time: 9:30 am - 11:30 am from April 29 to May 1
Venue: Xianli Music Square of Xidi Road in Jing’an Town

Doumen is famous for Cantonese folk art legacy with more than 20 long-existing types such as Cantonese Operatic and Shatian Folk songs. There will be exhibitions and performances of the intangible cultural heritages enabling tourists to appreciate classic operas and folk songs, learn about internal culture and knowledge, and attend interactive activities.

Rural food festival

Time: 9:30 am - 9:30 pm on April 29 and 30

Venue: Qinghe Farm at Dongwan Village in Lianzhou Town
The Qinghe Farm Rural Food Festival features mulberry leaf grass carp and self-produced ecological dishes such as lotus roots, duck, chicken, edible wild herbs, mulberry leaf syrup, and soup. Visitors will also have a chance to taste representative traditional cuisines of Lianzhou Town such as Steamed Yellow Sand Clam, Preserved Duck Bundle, and Arrowroot. Activities will also include mulberry picking, dragon boat rowing, tug-of-war on water, cycling, and camping.    

Hakka cultural activities

Time: 9 am - 5 pm from April 29 to May 1

Venue: Xiashan Village of Baijiao Town

Xiashan Village will showcase traditional Hakka culture, food, and folk activities by offering fish and shrimp handiwork, bamboo clapper songs, Hakka Salt Tea, Wormwood Rice Cakes, bamboo weaving, fun games, and a countryside rambling path.

Old Street Temple Fair

Time: 9 am - 4:30 pm from April 29 to May 1

Venue: Doumen Old Street at Doumen Town 

The Old Street was built in late 19th century and stirs many memories of senior residents. There used to be over 200 banks and shops belonging to 500 households mainly selling cloth, Chinese medicine, and rice. The typical European-style buildings still attract many tourists. The temple fair during the May Day holiday will integrate Cantonese Opera performances, rickshaws, local snacks, rooster olives, and acrobatic performances to recreate the prosperous scene of the area. 

Sunflower blooming 

Time: 9 am - 6 pm from April 29 to May 1

Venue: Yi Feng Ecological Health Care Park at Lianzhou Town

Yi Feng Ecological Health Care Park will offer a sea of blooming sunflowers to tourists during the May Day holiday. It will also organize various activities such as a kite flying competition, picnics, sketching, paper-folding, windmills, succulent plants, floral arranging, free ancient costumes don, and colorful games.

Folk art festival

Time: 9:30 am - 5 pm on April 29 and 30

Venue: Zhuhai Xianyun Art Garden near Lishan Village of Qianwu Town

Qianwu Town will host the Xianyun Art Festival during the May Day holiday, covering a painting exhibition and on-site interaction, Qianwu Piaose Street Procession, lion dance folk art performance, and folk snack sales exhibition. Visitors can experience the charm of local culture, characteristic daily life, colorful folk customs, and the beauty of Western culture. 

Parent-child horse-riding

Time: 9 am - 5 pm from April 29 to May 1

Venue: Nan’ao Village at Baijiao Town

The Lingnan-style Nan’ao Village will feature parent-child games in rural areas to build up stronger relationships among families. There will be boat cruising, shrimp catching, ring tossing and horse riding. 

Fruit picking and tasting

Time: 9:30 am - 5:30 pm in April and May

Venue: Shiyiren Pitaya Farm at Baijiao Town

Shiyiren Pitaya Farm grows fruits and vegetables in the original ecological manner. During the May Day holiday, tourists can get close to nature, learn cultivation skills and experience fruit picking. They can also boat in lake, ramble along the wind chime gallery and overlook the Xijiang River at the viewing deck. After visiting the purple-heart-pitaya base, they can indulge in featured products and organic farm vegetables.
