Russians keen on this and next Airshow China
The Knights and Swifts aerobatic teams of the Russian Air Force gave a follow-up performance at Airshow China 2016 on Nov 2 and plan even more excitement with new planes in two years.
“This show is a return performance in Zhuhai after 12 years’ absence. I’m very excited!” said Swifts Capt Sergey Osyaikin. The Swifts’ performance with MiG-29 fighters at the fifth airshow in 2004 was the team debut in Zhuhai.

This year’s performance was the first in which the two Russian teams performed in a composite formation. According to Sergey Scheghlov, Knights captain, this was much more difficult than a single-team show. Timing became the key to complete formation conversions, air rolls, and large-span somersaults.
Both captains agreed that tacit understanding was of great importance in the cooperation. Regular joint training and experiences of veteran pilots also contributed enormously to success.
Along the lines of safety, however, the composite formation won’t perform Pugachev's Cobra, a standard aerobatics display specific to Su-27 fighters. Nonetheless, classic poses will be maintained though to thrill spectators, Scheghlov said. He added that the Knights will soon be flying Su-30 fighters and will probably perform in two years at the next Airshow China in Zhuhai with the new aircraft.
