Zhuhai served into world spotlight

Updated: 2016-11-09

News stories were printed, aired, and posted worldwide about not only the Nov 1-6 Huajin Securities WTA Elite Trophy, but also about the host city of Zhuhai.

Coverage of the tennis tourney by 389 journalists from 58 media outlets representing 167 countries and regions further enhanced Zhuhai’s new international image. Concurrently, another audience was attracted to the city by Airshow China.

Meanwhile, aside from local mass media such as Zhuhai Daily and Zhujiang Evening Post newspapers and Zhuhai TV, sports news reporters also hailed from domestic media outlets such as CCTV-5, CCTV News, Great Sports, China Radio International, Xinhua News Agency, China News Service, and China Daily.

Taking part in more than 20 press conferences and 58 interviews, the reporters filed some 3,690 stories. Moreover, CCTV-5+ and www.iqiyi.com broadcasted the entirety of the tournament live online. Television stations in America, Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific regions also aired the matches.

WTA ambassador and German tennis legend Steffi Graf arrived in Zhuhai on Nov 5. While here, the retired champion publically demonstrated her famous backhand on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge -- the longest cross-sea structure in the world.

Upon the announcement on May 20 that Graf would attend the tournament in Zhuhai, more than a thousand news reports were posted internationally.

For years, Zhuhai was mostly an unknown entity. But now, this environmentally livable city at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta is becoming enamored by the rest of the world.
