A pet name is given to a newborn baby in line with the Five Elements and the infant’s own situation to supplement the contract name. For example, a child with a weak physical constitution is contracted with the name of a century-old tree on a carefully selected lucky day on which worship takes place with wine as a rite.

When the child reaches school age, a formal name is given to be used by teachers and schoolmates. Again, upon marriage, comes another name in accordance with ones position in the family hierarchy. At age 30, however, there is yet another new name. Finally, there is an assumed name at 60, and the name is overlapped every 10 years.
