Ten local bridges designed to truly represent Hengqin
Distinctly different bridges, each in harmony with something special about Hengqin New Area, have been redesigned. All 10 run north-south over the Tianmu River between Da and Xiao Hengqin mountains.
The largest highway bridge on the river has six lanes and is 350 m (383 yd) long and 40 m (44 yd) wide. It is sixth in the new workorder and will be given a do-over harmonized with scenes of Hengqin Island.
The bridges are numbered 1 to 10 and their names are Cantonese words that share a similar pronunciation with those numbers. The names will easily remind people of Chinese idioms with good expectations and wishes.

The designs consider functional and esthetic aspects while individual differences are to present a whole picture of an ecological island with urban landscapes. For example, Shuangshuang (双双桥), the second bridge, will be humpbacked to resemble Hengqin Oyster, a local specialty, and remind travelers of the sea.
The newly built Yiyi Bridge (依依桥) opened to traffic last October. The cable-stayed span, 196 m (214 yd) long and 38 m (42 yd) wide, is an important sub-arterial passage located near a marina at Hengqin New Area Comprehensive Service Area.
Three bridges are in the final design stages as work on the others proceeds on different schedules.
