Online shops pull the plug on Zhuhai's Computer City

Xiangwan Computer City will end 14 years in Wanzaisha of Old Xiangzhou near Yale Plaza (Jusco) after losing money during the past two years as many customers switched to online shopping.

The three-story shopping complex at 2030 Fenghuang Road opened in early 2005 with floorage of 1,100 sq m (.11 hectares). It was soon bustling with shoppers for computers and components, mobile phones, video games, and other digital products. At one point it had 95 booths rented out, but only 41 are left in its dying weeks.

What's more, Computer City's property management company, which leases the site from China Telecom Zhuhai Branch, had to keep paying rents that climbed substantially every three years.

The electronics shopping mall will not close until the booth owners are all relocated, but that must be done by March 31, according to a notice.
