Trees get wheels of help in keeping Zhuhai's air clean

Bicycle-sharing startup Hello Chuxing (formerly Hellobike) reports that Zhuhai users rode a combined 195 million km (121 million miles) last year -- about 4,880 times the circumference of the Earth.

That saved 9,780 tons of carbon emissions figuring that driving per 100 km (62 miles) consumes 8 liters of gasoline, each of which would emit .627 kg of carbon, according to an annual report released by Hello Chuxing on Feb 18. Apparently, if one tree absorbs 10 kg of carbon, the local bike riders have done what would have taken 978,000 trees.

The Shanghai-based company entered Zhuhai in October 2017 and soon built a user group of 1 million registrants as of the end of 2018. They were serviced by 43,000 Hello Chuxing bikes.

The statistics show that the longest ride in Zhuhai last year took 2 hours and 12 minutes. The user pedaled about 10.7 km at 80.8 m (265 ft) per minute.

The bike-sharing economy is thriving as a small part of the broader sharing economy in China, which is part of an environmental protection pattern. Other popular brands include Mobike and Qingju.
