Nature, culture, science, opera, and food all come to the fore in Doumen District as the May Day holiday commemorates the labor of workers and blossoming of spring. 

Doumen Paddy Field Art Festival

Urban dwellers on a quest for a natural lifestyle will transplant rice seedlings, model clay figurines, stretch and weave straws, and explore mazes during the Paddy Field Art Festival.

In addition to art performances and farmhouse treats, varieties of Hakka, Guangzhou, and Shantou-Chaozhou-Jieyang cuisines will also be on offer in the vast paddy fields. Photos may be taken.

Starry Night Above the Tropic of Cancer

The most northerly circle of latitude at which the Sun can be seen directly overhead is also being celebrated. The Tropic of Cancer stretches 2,000 km (1,243 miles) in China across Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Yunnan, and Taiwan.

This exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of the Conghua Mark, which pinpoints the Tropic of Cancer at 23:26' 28" north latitude. Some 140 pictures portray the heavens from the moon, sun, and solar system to the universe.
