Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸) bus stops, taxi stands, and ride-sharing spaces in the underground passage are closed until Dec 10 while an all-round upgrade is completed with enhanced safety, environmental, and other improvements.

Gongbei Checkpoint, busiest of its kind in the country

The support passage has been in service since 1999. It passes below Gongbei Checkpoint Square, connecting Lovers Avenue to the east and Changsheng Road to the west. But now, the three lanes each way are no longer able to handle surging traffic, especially since the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge opened to traffic last fall. 

Different segments of road

Work is being carried out on the ceiling, lighting system, pillars, side wall, road surface, pipelines, and ventilation system, according to Zhuhai Zhengfang Urban Construction Management. The overall style will remain modern and simple.

In the initial plan, the south-side lane of the underground passage will be designated for public transportation to accommodate taxi and bus-related areas. The north-side road will be used by ride-sharing vehicles, according to an officer at the Gongbei Checkpoint Comprehensive Management Office.

Gongbei Checkpoint has the largest border-crossing volume in the country. It is the main portal of entry between the Chinese mainland and Macao, and broke volume records four times in 2018.

Bus route adjustments

Buses 1, 2, 10, 32, 33 canceled Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸) and Gongbei (拱北) stops but temporarily added South Guihua (桂花南) and East Paotai Mt (炮台山东) stops;

Bus 601 (→Baijiao General Station白蕉总站) canceled Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸), Gongbei (拱北), and Liangfenqiao (凉粉桥) stops, and temporarily added South Guihua (桂花南) and East Paotai Mt (炮台山东) stops;

K10 (→Jida Bus Terminal 吉大总站) canceled Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸) stop, and temporarily added South Guihua (桂花南) and Yindo (银都) stops;

(→Chimelong 长隆) canceled Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸) stop, and temporarily added Yindo (银都) and Gongbei (拱北) stops;

Bus 11 (→Xiangzhou Port 香洲港) canceled Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸) stop;

Bus Z15's terminal Paotai Mt Park-Gongbei Checkpoint (炮台山公园-拱北口岸) is temporarily replaced by Paotai Mt Park-Intercity MRT Zhuhai Station (Gate 6) (炮台山公园-城轨珠海站（6号站台）);

Loop line Bus 101 canceled Gongbei Checkpoint (拱北口岸) and Macao-Viewing Platform (观澳平台), and temporarily added South Shuiwan Road (水湾路南) stop.

South Guihua (桂花南) stop is set up in front of the Gongbei branch of the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), about 90 m (98 yd) from Qiaoguang Road (侨光路). East Paotai Mt (炮台山东) stop is in front of Haoyunxuan (濠韵轩), about 290 m (317 yd) from Yuehai Road (粤海路).

At the same time, passengers can take Buses 6, 2, 10, 32, 33, 601 on the west side of Gongbei (formerly Gongbei Vanguard Department Stop拱北华润万家前站台), which will take them to the Intercity MRT Zhuhai Station (城轨珠海站) for free during the renovation period.

Taxi arrangements

To take a cab, go to the taxi waiting area of the Intercity MRT Zhuhai Station or the one next to the Gongbei Checkpoint Bus Terminal. A new plan will replace the temporary solution, according to the Zhuhai Transportation Bureau.

Other changes

In addition, Gongbei Checkpoint Kee Kuan Bus Station (拱北口岸岐关车站) has been relocated to the temporary Kee Kuan Bus Station yard (岐关车站临时站场). The specific location is close to the railway station (An exit). One can also turn left from Gongbei Checkpoint to the direction of the railway station and walk 100 m (109 yd) to a tourist bus parking lot where the station is nearby.
