Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai College team Perseverance placed among the eight top winners at the 18th RoboMaster Robotics Competition that concluded at Bao'an Stadium in Shenzhen on Aug 12. The T-DT Northeastern University Shenyang team took home the gold trophy along with 500,000 yuan ($73,370) as the grand prize.

China's largest robotic competition, RoboMaster cultivates practice-oriented technical talents for the artificial intelligence sector and enhances independent R&D and sci-tech innovation by university students.

Zhuhai BIT's Perseverance is a multi-discipline team, with students from schools of information technology, industrial automation, computer science and technology, and aviation who tackled technical issues. Meanwhile, business majors took care of project operations, outlay management, and marketing. The campus is located on Jinfeng Road, Tangjiawan.

The team qualified for the national final by placing second in the Southern Division. It edged into the final eight after easing past Shenzhen University and Taiyuan Institute of Technology but couldn't get past Northeastern University and runner-up Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

This year, 174 teams from more than 10 countries and regions attended the competition, including those from reputed Zhejiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Huazhong University of Science &Technology. Close to 200 teams consisting of 10,000 young engineers from around the world signed up for the 2019 RoboMaster competition season, with 32 teams battling it out in the final tournament.

"What students learned throughout the competition will allow them to expand their creative vision and develop solutions that could one day have real-world applications," said tournament director Gao Jianrong.

The event was hosted by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, All-China Students Federation, and Shenzhen Municipal People's Government.
