Steps taken toward building tunnel under Zhuhai Bridge
Public opinions are currently being sought while the Highway Bureau conducts risk assessments on the Zhuhai Bridge Tunnel proposed for Zhuhai Avenue.
Unlike the bridge, the tunnel would remain open to traffic between downtown and western areas during extreme weather. It would also relieve ever-increasing traffic pressure on the dual six-lane Zhuhai Bridge.

From Zhuhai Avenue, the tunnel would pass under the auxiliary road and then cross the Modaomen Waterway and Guadingjiao Mt to reconnect with the east-west thoroughfare. The 4.52-km (2.8-mile) below-surface section will have dual six lanes with a designed speed of 80 kmph (50 mph) and a height limit of 4.3 m (14 ft).
Associated works involve pipelines, lighting, landscaping, transport, security and surveillance, Sponge City construction, and a slow-traffic ramp. Construction is to take four years.
In the meantime, the extension of Zhuhai Avenue from the Zhuhai Bridge to west of the Niwanmen Bridge in Jinwan District will be advanced.
