Marriott and Hyatt Alila will build hotels on Dong'ao
Two upscale hotels with 360-degree coastal and cliff-side views will settle on Dong'ao Island under cooperation agreements signed between Zhuhai Gree Group, Marriott International, and Hyatt Hotels on Nov 14.
The Marriott resort at the northern end of the island will focus on wedding celebrations and honeymoon service. With floorage of 35,000 sq m (8.6 acres), it will consist of two arc-shaped structures with guestrooms overlooking Xiaozhu Bay and a circular mountaintop structure that offers support facilities and deluxe suites.

The Alila hotel brand developed by Hyatt values personalization and creativity. Occupying 15,000 sq m (3.7 acres), it will have 100 guestrooms on a floor area of 22,500 sq m (5.6 acres). Its appearance is inspired by the peninsula reef area on the southern tip of the island that invokes the passion of leaning over a rock edge above the sea.
In harmony with the cliff landscape, the major structure of the guestrooms is stepped back to appear detached from the ground. Sitting on the reshaped mountain, the hotel is to deliver visitors the impression of a lost wonderland.
The Marriott resort is expected to come into operation by 2022, and the Alila hotel will follow in 2023. Together they form part of the second phase of the 400,000-sq-m (98.8-acre) Lingding Seashore project funded by Gree with investment of 4 billion yuan ($571 million).
Costing 2.1 billion yuan ($300 million), the 120,000-sq-m (30-acre) Phase II will highlight international high-end ecological tourism. It will comprise facilities for wedding celebrations and honeymoons, healthcare, and parent-child entertainment as well as hotels.
The first phase was the Gree Dong'ao Hotel and support facilities, which opened in 2014. The 173,632-sq-m (43-acre) third phase will include high-end stand-alone hotels, private yachts, flights, and ecological-themed entertainment projects.
