Revolutionary hero's square transformed for visitors

Updated: 2020-01-23

Visitors are being encouraged to pay homage to revolutionary martyr Yang Pao'an's bronze statue on North Haibin Road between Jida and Old Xiangzhou while taking in the view of picturesque Xianglu Bay.

Yang was born in Beishan Village of Nanping Town and became an early CPC theorist. He is credited with introducing Marxism to South China during the May 4th Movement of 1919, and, at age 36, was executed secretly at the Longhua Police Command in Shanghai in August 1931.

His statue was erected near the Wanghai (Seaview) Pavilion in the 1980s. Located opposite Wanghailou Hotel, the surrounding environment had been mostly neglected for more than 30 years. As part of Phase I of the City Balcony landscape project, renovation of the square commenced last October.

The upgraded square, which covers 1,500 sq m (1,794 sq yd) and accommodates hundreds of people, will serve as a significant site for Red (revolutionary) education.

Zhuhai Xiangzhou Zhengfang Holding repaired the drainage system, paved the road surface with granite, polished the statue pedestal, and cleaned up wild seedlings.

After the Spring Festival holiday, pine and cypress trees will be transplanted to surrounding green areas to create a sense of space. Climbing plants will also be planted on retaining walls, to be viewable from Central Lovers Avenue. Moreover, stone-like handrails made of aluminum plates will be installed.

Nearby, steel girders for a 3-m-wide (3.28-yd-wide) skywalk have been installed. The walkway with open sea views will connect the square with Wanghai Pavilion by March and City Balcony's Seaview Platform and Tourist Service Center in the future.
