China's first corona virus-response hospital with permanent structure will be turned over for long-term use on Thursday, March 5 after 25 days of construction.

The two-story hospital, associated liquid oxygen and sewage treatment stations, and an air compressor room is located at the Fenghuang Mt Branch behind the 5th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. With floorage of 15,600 sq m (3.85 acres), the 13.2-m-tall (14.4-yd-tall) facility is situated at the foot of Fenghuang Mt at the site of a former parking lot.

The branch is also equipped with 160 nursed wards, 300 patient beds, two operating rooms, intensive care units (ICU), clinical labs, and computerized tomography (CT) machines. It will receive patients with corona virus disease (COVID-19) for now, and be retained for the treatment of any other epidemics that may arise.

By Thursday, the hospital at 52 East Meihua Road in Xiangzhou District will be able to receive 800 in-patients with infectious diseases. They will be accommodated in 200 negative-pressure beds, more than 300 beds allocated from tumor wards, and 300 new beds in the Fenghuang Mt Branch, according to a hospital executive.

The design plan was nailed down on Feb 8 with structure adjusted from modular container to reinforced concrete, and work commenced on Feb 9. China Construction 3rd Engineering Bureau's Zhuhai branch has provided free accommodations for all workers, and is taking comprehensive preventative measures that include registration, body temperature measurements, and disinfection.

The construction period is expected to be cut from 278 days to less than a month thanks to optimized deployment of resources by the contractor and round-the-clock work by 3,000 employees.
