Activities aplenty; May Day tourist figures rather good
The five-day May Day holiday saw 858,100 visitors to the city, 165,400 of whom stayed overnight. Tourism revenue reached 423 million yuan ($60 million), according to the Zhuhai Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism & Sports Bureau.
From May 1 to 5, more than 400,000 tourists visited 10 municipal parks in downtown areas. Sunflower exhibitions held by Zhuhai Yuehua Landscaping Construction Management at Haibin and Yeli Island parks attracted a great deal of interest. Banzhang Mt Forest and Shixi parks were also top draws for outdoor activities.
Moreover, the Lingnan-styled (Cantonese) Phase II of Xiangshan Lake Park in New Xiangzhou opened in time for holiday-goers with campgrounds for recreational vehicles. In the West Wing, singing birds, fragrant flowers, and aerial walkways at Damenkou Wetland Park in Jinwan District drew many nature lovers.

Countryside and Red tourism attracted hordes of tourists to historic Jiexia Manor in Doumen and Gongleyuan Park and Huitong Village in Tangjiawan Town. Farming was experienced at Shili Lianjiang Agriculture Sightseeing & Experience Garden in Doumen's Lianzhou Town while many paid homage at Yang Pao'an Exhibition Hall in Nanping and Baishi Street on Qi'ao Island.
Changnanjing Old Path on Fenghuang Mt, a testament to Zhuhai and Macao's history of transportation and window to Hsiang-shan (Xiangshan) historic culture, was popular with hikers and cultural lovers with its roadside forest, brooks, and historical sites.
Apart from electrifying entertainment, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Hengqin New Area also held fireworks and UAV shows for May Day revelers, while the Sumcheetah of Sumlodol Hengqin Camping Town hosted themed activities such as gopher whacking, ring rolling, and hoopla. Lost City Water Park in Lanpu of Gongbei also offered water frolics.
To entice tourists, Blue Coast B&B on Guishan Island issued package tickets for golf and sailing, and Gree Dong'ao Hotel and Kaisa Kare Resort on Dong'ao Island offered discounted accommodation. Dolphin Bay on Guishan and Nansha Bay of Dong'ao Island also launched all-new water sports including stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, and kayaking.
Meanwhile, Dreamland Resort on Wanshan Island arranged tourist activities including hikes for a sunrise view, bike rides around the island, angling, and tours to a seafood drying yard.
In 2019, well before the viral outbreak, the city recorded 1.94 million May Day holidaymakers who spent 1.14 billion yuan ($169 million).
