Multi-colored sunflowers decorate parklands in Zhuhai
Sunflowers are blossoming in great numbers to delight visitors all during May at Yeli Island, Haibin, and Sea & Sky (Haitian) parks in downtown Zhuhai.
More than 3,000 sq m (3,588 sq yd) of sunflowers recently opened at Yeli Island Park off Central Lovers Avenue in Wanzaisha of Old Xiangzhou. Many of nine species are rarely cultivated in parks, including the aptly named White Lover, Black Swan with all black petals, ovary, and stem, Happy Dwarf with a dark-colored floral disc, tiny Golden Monica, and bright Gold 08, Green Angel with interlaced light yellow petals, and Red Lemon.
The rare species are bred in the Zhuhai Yuehua Landscaping Construction Management nursery and transplanted to the park, which saves cost, increases the rate of survival, and ensures a longer florescence as compared to potted transplants, according to Chen Xiaojuan, director of the Yeli Island Park Administration.

In addition to sunflowers, maidenhair, kniphofia uvaria (torch lily/red hot poker), zinnia elegans (youth-and-age), and begonia benariensis at the park are in full bloom.
The largest sea of sunflowers in the city is at Haibin Park between Haibin Road and Lovers Avenue in Jida. More than 4,200 sq m (5,023 sq yd) of the golden flowers will fully blossom at the park's lawn and east entrance by this weekend.
Elsewhere, the park is planted with more than 800 sq m (957 sq yd) of scarlet, violet, and pink zinnia elegans that are also in full bloom.
In New Xiangzhou, Sea & Sky (Haitian) Park between East Meihua Road and Central Lovers Avenue, which reopened during the May Day holiday, is home to more than 600 sq m (718 sq yd) of sunflowers against the backdrop of open sea views.
