Main blasting has begun on a passage through Jiangjun Mt that separates Nanping Sci-Tech Industrial Park and the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, and which will connect to the Hengqin Tunnel.

Zhuhai Da Heng Qin initiated construction last October. The firm is now excavating a 2.8-km (1.7-mile) section that is to be completed this year. The north-south underground route from 1st Pingbei Road in Nanping will pass under Zhuhai Avenue and extend 3.86 km (2.4 miles) to Nanqin Road in the FTZ.

The dual six-lane Jiangjun Mt Tunnel will cost 1.41 billion yuan ($198 million) and allow a maximum speed of 60 kmph (37 mph). The main line is being built to urban express road standards.

At present, motorists traveling from the Zhuhai FTZ to Nanping take the Jialin Mt Tunnel-Wanzai route or detour to Nanqin Road. When the new tunnel opens to traffic in October 2022, the journey will be shortened to 4 km (2.5 miles).

Moreover, a 2.2-km (1.4-mile) underground extension from the south entrance of the Jiangjun Mt Tunnel to the Hengqin Tunnel is in the preliminary design stage. The Hengqin Tunnel under the Maliuzhou Waterway from North Ring (Huandao) Road to Nanwan avenues opened In October 2018 as the third paved connection to Hengqin Island.

The design scheme of the FTZ-Hengqin section was approved by the Land Planning Bureau of the Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee in 2019.
