Updated: 2020-08-12

Pingxi 5th Road in Nanping Town will be extended northward to Zhongshan's Tanzhou Town via a new bridge, according to a feasibility report recently approved by the Zhuhai Development & Reform Bureau.

The dual four-lane bridge, 72 m (79 yd) long and 22 m (24 yd) wide, will be built over the Zhu'na River, which delineates the cities' border. A 203-m (222-yd) north-south urban secondary trunk road will connect a proposed roadway in Tanzhou Town to a planned intersection with Yanhe and Pingxi 5th roads in Nanping Town in Xiangzhou District.

The Zhuhai Highway Affairs Center says the design process is currently underway. Construction is expected to commence in 2021 and will last about a year.

The construction comprises soft foundation treatment, lighting, landscaping, security surveillance, water supply, drainage, power supply, telecommunication, land requisition and demolition, compensation for crop losses, and pipeline removal.

The project budget is estimated at 141.6 million yuan ($20 million). Zhuhai and Zhongshan will share the cost of main bridge construction, while covering respective expenditures on approach bridges and roads within their jurisdictions.

Currently, the only connection between Zhuhai and Zhongshan across the Zhu'na River is an unsafe bridge west of Pingxi 5th Road. The new bridge will both address safety hazards and facilitate travel between the cities.
