For the third consecutive year, Zhuhai is 1st nationwide in terms of sustainable development, according to the Blue Book of Sustainable Development: Evaluation Report on the Sustainable Development of China (2020), which was released Dec 1.

The book is issued by the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, Columbia University in the City of New York, AliResearch, and Social Sciences Academic Press. It places Zhuhai ahead Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Wuxi, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Xiamen.

Ratings are based on economic development, social well-being, resources and environment, consumption emissions, and environmental governance. Categorized are the entire country, provinces, and 100 large and medium cities.

The Chinese Sustainable Development Assessment Index System used for analysis was compiled by the China Center for International Economic Exchanges and the Earth Institute of Columbia University. Sustainable development, says the United Nations, promotes prosperity while protecting the planet.

In recent years, the comprehensive economic competitiveness of Zhuhai has consistently risen due to an advantageous business environment, innovative systems, and the attraction of talent. The city is ranked 5th in the country for economic vibrancy, according to the 18th Report on China's Urban Competitiveness by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Economic Daily.

A significant node in the Greater Bay Area, Zhuhai is the sole Chinese mainland city connected directly to both Hong Kong and Macao by roadway. Over the years the city has transformed transportation, energized innovation, optimized investment policies, provided appropriate human resources, blossomed in technology, and not only preserved but promoted its culture.

Adhering to a philosophy of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets," Zhuhai has staunchly protected the environment against air, water, and soil pollution.

According to the Ministry of Ecology & Environment, Zhuhai air quality ranked 1st from June to August and 3rd from January to October among 168 key cities nationwide. Water quality at nine centralized water sources, including the Dajingshan and Zhuxiandong reservoirs, were all up to standard from January to November.

Zhuhai was selected in November as one of China's Top 10 Happiest Cities (prefecture-level) for the fifth time. Oriental Outlook magazine and think tank Liaowang Institute determined that the city has refined the urban government and continuously improved the living environment, employment, education, and medical treatment.
