A new photovoltaic new-energy plant costing 17 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) will be built in Jinwan District by Guangdong Gaojing Solar Energy Science & Technology, which will elevate Zhuhai's strategic position in the national new-energy layout.

Gaojing and the State-Owned Assets Supervision & Administration Commission of Zhuhai signed the agreement Dec 10 at the opening ceremony of the Macao-Zhuhai Entrepreneur Summit 2020. It supports an entire industrial chain of photovoltaic new energy as part of a 100-billion-yuan ($15-billion) new-energy industrial cluster in Zhuhai.

Preparations are being made for the first, second, third phases to come to production in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Once fully operational, the project is to generate 50 gigawatts (GW) in capacity, 27 billion yuan ($4 billion) in annual output value, and create 6,000 jobs.

Xu Zhiqun, founder of Gaojing Solar Energy, said Zhuhai has location advantages, solid industrial foundation, tailored support policies, prominent natural resources, and clear opportunities due to the Greater Bay Area. Moreover, Jinwan has developed its industry and is cost-efficient in land, water, and electricity resources, he added at the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Center in Shizimen.

An up-and-comer in solar energy, Gaojing has a seasoned team, equipment, and technology. It engages in the R&D and manufacture of large-size silicon wafers and rods, with attention to the new-generation 210MM silicon wafer. In addition to the 50GW photovoltaic project, Gaojing also plans to set up headquarters and a sales center in Zhuhai.

The photovoltaic industry now surpasses coal as the most cost-competitive power supply mode in more than two-thirds of the world and has broad demand prospects. China's photovoltaic industry ranks 1st in the world in terms of competitiveness, with a lion's share of more than 70 percent in global capacity, said Xu.
