Zhuhai College of Jilin University is now an independent private institution of higher education with a new name – Zhuhai College of Science & Technology.

The Ministry of Education approved the change, stating that the college will cultivate skilled talents that cater to socioeconomic development. It is to strengthen construction of teaching and scientific platforms, practical bases, and faculties with improved management and distinctive characteristics.

Fronting Caotang Bay in Sanzao Town, Jinwan District, the institution was originally established by Jilin University and Zhuhai Huazheng Educational Investment on May 18, 2004. Over the past 16 years the 5,000-mu (333-hectare, 824-acre) campus came to house more than 30,000 undergraduate students majoring in 60 disciplines at 25 subordinate colleges.

In December 2019, the third-party research institute Airuishen Chinese University Alumni Alliance Network ranked the college first among its peers for the sixth consecutive year. It also led the list of competitiveness among 271 independent colleges nationwide in 2016 and 2017, according to reports by the Research Center for Chinese Science Evaluation of Wuhan University together with related institutions.
