Macao side inspected; new checkpoint opening looms
Qingmao Checkpoint (New Guangdong-Macao Channel) in Maoshengwei (in the Zhuhai-Macao Cross-Border Industrial Zone, Gongbei) is being prepared to open for 24/7 pedestrian crossings later this year.
Macao Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak announced May 5 that the completed post on that side is being inspected prior to acceptance. Equipment on the Macao side has been installed, and joint commissioning and debugging will be conducted once the Zhuhai post, connecting passageway, and canal rearrangement are ready.
The facility is 800 m (half a mile) southwest of the bustling Macao Frontier Post exit to Gongbei over the Canal de Patos. It has 168,000 sqm (42 acres) of floorage with departure and arrival areas each having 50 self-service and two staffed channels.
Once operational, Qingmao Checkpoint will open a 400-m (437-yd) weatherproof corridor to the Intercity MRT Zhuhai Station to relieve pressure on Gongbei Checkpoint, according to Macao-headquartered Guangdong Namyue Group, the building contractor. A "Joint Inspection & One-Time Release" mode will be adopted to handle 200,000 crossings. Of 5.8 million visitors that passed through Macao last year, 3.8 million used Gongbei Checkpoint.
