Sci-tech and overseas returnee projects from Zhuhai garnered one gold medal, two silvers, and three bronzes Oct 27 at the "Community Entrepreneurs Cup" Guangdong Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition finals. A Macao team also won a gold prize.

The Zhuhai gold was for an allergen microfluidic chip developed by researchers led by Dr Hong Haiyu of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. The patented chip is applied for precise diagnosis and treatment as well as curative effect monitoring for allergic diseases. Its clinical transformation will be promoted to increase China's diagnosis and treatment level of allergic diseases and provide customized care.

A Macao team won a gold award with a wearable cloud platform for multimodal rapid diagnosis of cerebral apoplexy (stroke). Liu Nian and Yang Qichen of the University of Macau also won first prize at the 2021 "Maker in Guangdong” Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition of Zhuhai on Sept 8. Their project, "wearable stroke diagnosis cloud platform," addresses the rapid identification of stroke types of which cerebral apoplexy is one.

The sci-tech and overseas returnee division of the Guangdong Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition has been held in Zhuhai for six consecutive years. This year's division attracted 600 projects covering new energy, next-generation information technology, big data, and artificial intelligence.

The projects also encompass strategic emerging industries in integrated circuit, life science, biomedicine, and electronic information fields. These are key to Zhuhai's industrial development and breakthrough, according to Liu Guoxiang, deputy director of Guangdong HUST Industrial Technology Research Institute.

In support of overseas returnee projects, Zhuhai can provide industrial park spaces for startups, construct standard laboratories and production workshops, and streamline certification procedures for biomedicine and medical apparatus enterprises, noted Liu.

Meanwhile, the competition established means for the docking of high-quality entrepreneurship and innovation resources from Hong Kong and Macao while boosting development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

Zhang Zhe, who studied in both Macao and the Chinese mainland, and his team, for instance, presented a diabetic foot dressing, which promotes healing. Zhang has relocated his office to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science & Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation Between Guangdong & Macao. He hopes to move the production line and laboratory to the Hengqin zone in the future and further tap into the mainland market.

The competition increased the company's popularity and brought a host of intended partners in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, said Zhang.
