North Lovers Avenue is expected to be extended northward to the Zhuhai-Zhongshan border and may connect with Zhongshan's proposed Binhai Road in the future.

The 7.07-km (4.4-mile) extension will be a south-north dual six-lane coastal arterial road stretching from the Qi'ao Bridge in Tangjiawan to Zhuhai-Zhongshan border. Engineering exploration and design bidding started last year and five alternative proposals have been shortlisted for research and comparison.

Of note, the Houhuan-Nanwei section is a vital part of the project. Its surrounding areas in the Zhuhai National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Tangjiawan) are designed to become a Central Intelligent District (CID), which will base in Zhuhai, emerge with the Greater Bay Area, and connect the whole world.

Spanning 37 km (23 miles), Lovers Avenue currently runs along the eastern coastline from the west end of the Qi'ao Bridge in the north to Hengqin Bridge in the south.

Zhongshan officials announced in late December 2021 that the city will join hands with Zhuhai to construct Lovers Avenue with distinctive characteristics in the west Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

A 17-km (11-mile) Xianghai Road, also known as Zhongshan's Lovers Avenue, is being constructed in Cuiheng New Area that borders Zhuhai's Jinding Town. It connects Cuiheng and Nanlang expressways alongside the Damaoli Waterway. The project will include both road and dike operations such as seawall reinforcement and sluice and wave wall construction. Feasibility research, engineering exploration, and design bidding of its south section have been underway since the end of 2021.
